Running Unaffiliated

Dawn's personal and professional background transcends partisan politics.

FORT COLLINS, Colorado.--August 8, 2023--One week after declaring her candidacy for District Attorney of the 8th Judicial District, Unaffiliated candidate Dawn Downs is thanking supporters.

“I am beyond grateful for the flood of support I have received from so many people in the first week of the campaign. The enthusiasm and well wishes have been humbling. People are excited about having an unaffiliated candidate on the ballot, knowing that I will put our community's needs and criminal justice system above politics. I look forward to bringing my years as a prosecutor to the office to ensure we are always putting public safety, justice, and accountability first,” Dawn said.

If elected, Dawn will be the first Unaffiliated candidate, and the first female to hold the office of District Attorney in Larimer and Jackson counties.

“The District Attorney should not be a political position; it should be about community safety and seeking justice,” Dawn said. “I am running as an Unaffiliated candidate to represent my perspective and values with authenticity. I don’t believe politics should play a part in the decisions a District Attorney makes.”

Over the years, Dawn has registered at different times with both major parties. She has consistently supported and voted for initiatives and candidates based on particular issues and policies, rather than party affiliation. She believes that safety, justice, and accountability impact everyone in our community, regardless of political stance. She believes that everyone’s rights should be upheld, all people should be treated fairly with dignity and respect, and justice should be sought without exception.

In the Eighth Judicial District, our communities have recently experienced the devastating impacts that politically driven policy and procedures can have on the criminal justice system, including a lack of accountability for offenders, and victims being deprived of justice. Dawn believes that policy and practice should be based on nonpartisan safety- and justice-driven initiatives, not politics.

“A District Attorney must be a dedicated public servant elected to seek truth and pursue justice on behalf of the state and our community in criminal judicial proceedings,” Dawn said. “It is not the D.A.’s role to create the laws or choose which laws should be enforced. Charging decisions should be based on the facts at hand, without regard for what’s politically favorable. Our communities deserve a District Attorney focused on seeking justice for victims and businesses by holding offenders accountable and finding rehabilitative solutions for all parties involved.” Learn more about Dawn's experience and ways to support the campaign at www.DawnForDA.com.
